Alex out of Popstar to Operastar, plus Fool demo online!
Saturday, 16th January 2010

Perhaps it was inevitable, but despite a stirring performance of Largo al factotum last night Alex James finished in the bottom two on the first episode of Popstar To Operastar. Alex and Vanessa White (from The Saturdays) had to rely on the panel of judges to save one of them, but they voted two each. The public vote was then counted and Vanessa had more votes. You can watch the entire episode on the ITV Player or, if you prefer, you can watch Alex's performance here!

Steve Lamacq played an early demo of Blur song Fool on his BBC 6 Music show yesterday. Recorded while they were still known as Seymour, it comes from a cassette which also features a demo of She's So High. Read more at Veikko's Blur Page where you can find out how to listen to the track!

Popstar to Operastar tonight, plus lots of links!
Friday, 15th January 2010

ITV's Popstar to Operastar begins tonight! According to the Mirror newspaper, "Each week it's up to you to call and save your favourite. The bottom two go before the judging panel." So if you can, VOTE ALEX! More Alex on TV = a good thing!

As you can imagine, there has been a lot of coverage of last night's No Distance Left To Run premiere which was attended by the band. I've gathered some links together for you:

Absolute Radio interview with Dave;
Absolute Radio interview with Damon;
Guardian website footage of Blur playing Parklife last year;
Guardian website footage from last night's premiere;
Sky News website footage of last night's premiere;
Telegraph website footage and article

Finally, two scans from British newspapers today - one from the Star and one from the Mirror.

Remember - VOTE ALEX!

Don't forget that "Popstar to Operastar" starts tonight on ITV1. I'll be Tweeting during the show about how well (or not) Alex James does.

Parlophone leave us all a-Twitter! Plus Blur premiere photos and more reviews!
Thursday, 14th January 2010

Interesting post on Parlophone's Twitter account:

CALLING ALL BLUR FANS!! something great and visually spectacular will be posted here around 11pm tonight. stay tuned!

Whatever could it be? I'll update later when all is revealed!

It's the world premiere of No Distance Left To Run tonight, and plenty of photos of the band outside are available to browse online - check out gettyimages.com and daylife.com. The photos of Alex and Graham together are priceless!

Three more reviews of the documentary - two online at mirror.co.uk and hornseyjournal.co.uk, and one online right here (image size: roughly 1MB. Scanned from the latest NME - cover date 16 January). Speaking of the NME, next week's issue will have "an exclusive inside look at [Plastic Beach] with a new interview and pictures"!

Gorillaz teaser #45732

Lauren Laverne, ex of Kenickie and now presenter on BBC 6music, has posted the following on her laverneshow Twitter account:

Listening to the new Gorillaz single - BOBBY WOMACK ATTACK!

More Gorillaz rumours, plus another Blur documentary review
Thursday, 7th January 2010

Check out gorillaz-news.livejournal.com for a rumour that a new Gorillaz single will be released on the 26th of January. In the comments, a second possible tracklisting is revealed. This listing also appeared on (and subsequently disappeared from) Wikipedia today.

A second review of No Distance Left To Run, this time from Uncut magazine:

For anyone who followed Blur's return to active duty with last year's live shows, this will come as a satisfying cap to their recent activities. No Distance... might not offer much that's revelatory, but it scores in archive material and band access from their June 2009 tour rehearsals onwards. Those rehearsals are fascinating to watch for the dynamic tension between Albarn and Coxon: "You're getting tense, and I'm getting more tense," Damon tells Graham as they attempt to nail "Out Of Time", recorded originally after the guitarist had left. There is fun to be had watching a pre-teen Damon in his school play, footage of the band hammered backstage during the Modern Life Is Rubbish era, and girls screaming for Damon during the Parklife heyday. A solid enough document of the band's history, but one very much made on their own terms. 3 stars out of five. Review by Michael Bonner.

Rumours, a gig, a review, stamps, and a backtrack!
Wednesday, 6th January 2010

Firstly a couple of items via Gorillaz-Unofficial (please note that these are rumours at this stage - nothing has been confirmed yet). The first single from new Gorillaz album Plastic Beach could be Stylo, with the video featuring Bruce Willis (source: here). An alleged tracklisting for the album was posted on Wikipedia earlier but has now been removed. Gorillaz-Unofficial have it here. Once again, nothing has been confirmed at this stage. Another rumour still not confirmed is that Gorillaz will appear at this year's Coachella festival.

Graham Coxon is going to be one of the special guests as "Robyn Hitchcock presents a Maritime Evening" at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the 30th of January. Tickets are £20 each. Check out southbankcentre.co.uk for full details.

A lovely review of No Distance Left To Run is available at empireonline.com. They've given the film 4 stars out of five and state that "revealing interviews and some stunning live footage make this one of the better band behind-the-scenes". Can't wait!

It was announced some time ago that Royal Mail would be issuing a set of stamps featuring "classic album covers", and they're finally being released tomorrow. Blur's Parklife is one of those featured. To purchase a set, or simply to check them out, visit royalmail.com.

And finally... after initially refusing to show the Blur documentary, the Colchester Odeon has backtracked and announced a one-off screening. Read the full story at gazette-news.co.uk.

Check out Gorillaz-Unofficial LiveJournal for scans featuring Gorillaz from the latest issue (cover date February 2010) of Uncut magazine.

Possible Gorillaz album release date, plus Alex to appear on new TV show
Saturday, 2nd January 2010

Gorillaz-Unofficial has revealed a possible release date for Plastic Beach, the third album by Gorillaz. The Gorillaz-Unofficial LiveJournal quotes both the latest issue of Q Magazine and online retailer cdwow.com as having the release date as the 8th of March. Tracklisting, lead single, etc, all still to be announced.

Alex James is set to appear in a new ITV reality show called Popstar to Operastar. According to mirror.co.uk:

Blur's Alex James, Bernie Nolan, McFly's Danny Jones, ex-Pop Idol star Darius Danesh, Shakespear's Sister's Marcella Detroit, Jimmy Osmond, Vanessa White from girl band The Saturdays and ex-Hear'Say singer Kym Marsh will be trained to perform world-famous opera songs. Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon will mentor the stars.

In a bizarre twist they will be judged on their weekly efforts by rock legend Meat Loaf and makeover king and Classic FM DJ Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. Myleene Klass and Alan Titchmarsh will host the show, which starts on ITV1 on the 15th of January.

As already announced the worldwide release date is 19 January 2010, but now it has been revealed that the film's world premiere will take place at the Odeon West End on the 14th of January.

The film will be showing in the UK in selected Odeon and Picturehouse sites across the country, as well as the independent Broadway Nottingham. Thursday, 17th December 2009

Click the thumbnail on the right for a scan from yesterday's NME. They've been to an advance screening of the documentary No Distance Left To Run and report that it "covers the whole of Blur's career, from home footage of Albarn in school plays to videos of the band at the height of Britpop". Perhaps the school play footage in question is this gem on YouTube, showing Damon onstage in 1985.

The NME's article also talks about Graham's departure during the Think Tank sessions, and how he tried to avoid Damon during a visit to London Zoo!

Thursday, 10th December 2009

Sadly, the video of Seymour mentioned yesterday has now been marked private, but the uploader has released this message:

I've been (very politely) asked to sit on the Seymour video until No Distance Left To Run is released on 19th January. After that I'm hoping to get Superman, and some more of the 1989 gig up here.

I've not been hassled by record labels, publishers, movie producers or directors or anything else resembling "The Man". I just jumped the gun a bit! Thanks for your understanding.

In other news, EMI Australia have released artwork for the new Gorillaz album Plastic Beach - see the LiveJournal community ohnotheydidnt for more. No suggestion at present that this will be used for the album cover.

Supporting Folk Against FascismA couple of items for you tonight. First up, as posted on the Graham Coxon messageboard, is something Graham's keen for more people to be made aware of: Folk Against Fascism. For more info, click the banner on the right or click here.

Veikko's Blur Page has a link to a video of Seymour playing way back in December 1989. Visit vblurpage.com for more on that. Damon's baggy jumper is a real treat!

Sunday, 6th December 2009

Click the thumbnail on the right to view the Graham Coxon-starring "A life in the day" article from today's Sunday Times. File size is 1186x1500 pixels, and roughly 1MB.

A couple of links to keep you busy over the dark winter months - Alex James' varied musings from the Independent and the Guardian!

Turkish Gorillaz fans have something to look forward to - hurriyetdailynews.com has announced that the Gorillaz Sound System is to perform in Ankara on the 12th of December.

Thursday, 3rd December 2009

Yesterday's Independent features a nice review of Graham's Barbican gig - read it here. For some lovely videos of the show, check out joejoejoehearn's channel on YouTube.

There's been a change on the official Blur website regarding the release of the documentary No Distance Left To Run. It previously stated that the film would open "in cinemas worldwide" in January (see 29th November news update) but the website now reads:

An announcement is expected about theatrical distribution of the film into cinemas worldwide. 'No Distance Left to Run' will be released into digital cinemas across the country, giving the film a pristine 2K Digital Cinema screening, with 5.1 Surround Sound.

I've emailed the distributors to ask about the release schedule for the UK - if I get a reply I'll let you know ASAP!

Tuesday, 1st December 2009

Alan McGee in "Damon is great" shocker!

Visit the Guardian's website to read Alan McGee's (yes, really! Alan McGee!) thoughts on how Damon Albarn became one of the decade's musical pioneers!

Monday, 30th November 2009

Two scans from the latest Q magazine, cover date January 2010:

Gorillaz-Unofficial's livejournal has a transcript of the Paul Morley interview with Damon Albarn that I linked the other day. Highlights include: the third Gorillaz album is to be called Plastic Beach, and guest artists include Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mos Def, Barry Gibb, Bobby Womack, and The Horrors.

Sunday, 29th November 2009

The Blur website has been updated with a new splash page featuring the trailer for No Distance Left To Run in HD, along with the following:

NO DISTANCE LEFT TO RUN OPENS IN CINEMAS WORLDWIDE IN JANUARY 19TH 2010

A feature length documentary film telling the story of Blur is due for cinema release on January 19th. "No Distance Left to Run" is directed by 32 (Dylan Southern & Will Lovelace) and is a Pulse Films production.

Filmed throughout the band's 2009 rehearsals and acclaimed summer tour, No Distance Left To Run finds all four members of Blur together for the first time in nine years. With previously unseen archive material alongside new interviews and reportage, the film recounts the highs and lows of a very British band from the late '80s to their headline return at Glastonbury and Hyde Park. The result is a musing on Englishness and identity and a portrait of friendship and resolution.

The trailer looks outstanding in full-screen HD! I've noticed some streaming problems, which hopefully are just temporary - if you find it difficult to view then try YouTube where you can watch it in normal mode.

In other news, the Guardian website features a short-but-sweet review of Graham Coxon's show last night at the Barbican (some images here and here), and next week's Sunday Times will feature "My days are no longer a Blur: Graham Coxon's revealing A Life in the Day"!

Saturday, 28th November 2009

First off I'd like to give a big Thank You to Hayley Barone for sending me scans from the latest issue of Uncut magazine (cover date December 2009), featuring a nice interview with Graham Coxon! Click on the thumbnails below to view the scans, which are a massive (and therefore very readable!!) 1700x2338 pixels in size. Thanks again Hayley!

Drew Athans, author of Black Book: The Live History of Blur, also runs the Blur Live Audio Archive Project, an "online supplement to Black Book and a place dedicated to preserving Blur's live history and researching their live recordings." Having recently downloaded and enjoyed a recording of Blur's Roxy show in Los Angeles in November 1991, I can highly recommend this site!

The Guardian website (guardian.co.uk) features a lovely interview with Damon Albarn. The page includes an audio player so you can listen to thirty-nine minutes of the interview!

The Times website (timesonline.co.uk) carries an article (presumably to feature in tomorrow's Sunday Times) about Blur's rise to the top.

The Blur website (blur.co.uk) has a link to the Times website where you can view three videos of Blur playing at Hyde Park! That link is HERE! The videos are Parklife, Beetlebum and Tender! And... they are AWESOME! Enjoy!

The Times also has a competition to win a Blur at Hyde Park poster, closing date 29 December. You have to sign-up to enter, and they seem to want an awful lot of personal details... UK residents only.

Friday, 27th November 2009

I've typed up the NME's interview with Graham - read it here. In it, he talks about Blur, Pete Doherty, and working on a film soundtrack.

This weekend's Sunday Times will include a link to download five live Blur tracks from iTunes. Apparently all you have to do is buy the paper, visit a website and enter the code provided, and you'll be able to download Coffee & TV, Advert, For Tomorrow, There's No Other Way and End Of A Century.

And now to the really really really big news! January 2010 will see a Blur documentary hitting cinemas! The news is mentioned on blur.co.uk, and the trailer is already available to view on timesonline.co.uk. The ever wonderful Veikko's Blur Page has some more info. I said this yesterday, but it's worth repeating: definitely STAY TUNED!

Thursday, 26th November 2009

A couple of news items for you. First up, the venue where Blur played their very first gig more than 20 years ago is to be commemorated with a blue plaque by the Performing Rights Society. Visit news.bbc.co.uk for the full story.

And... fresh from the NME website comes news that Graham Coxon has announced a soundtrack album which is, according to the guitarist, a bit like "Pink Floyd with fangs"! Check out nme.com for more details. The full interview is in this week's NME, which I will be picking up tomorrow. Stay tuned!

First things first, I've set up a Twitter account so you can keep informed of updates to Blurcentral, along with other Blur-related bits and pieces. Click on the Twitter icon above to follow Blurcentral.

I've finished the scans from the Sunday Times Spectrum photo supplement dedicated to Blur:

Click the thumbnails for the full-size images. The scans are large - 1162x1500 and roughly 1MB in size.

Saturday, 21st November 2009

Sorry for the lack of updates over the last few months - I've been busy with various projects. However, a couple of Blur news items deserve a mention:

The official Blur site, blur.co.uk, has had a complete makeover. It's all in Flash and looks great, although some people have reported problems viewing it with certain browsers. Twelve Blur songs, encoded at a very respectable 160kbps, can be played while browsing the site. There are also a selection of Blur videos to watch.

The Sunday Times tomorrow will include an "exclusive live Blur CD" featuring the following tracks recorded on tour this summer: She's So High, Girls & Boys, Badhead, Beetlebum, Parklife, Out Of Time, Song 2, Popscene, Tender and The Universal.

There will also be a "Spectrum special devoted to the band complete with unseen photos from the tour, and a feature in Culture focusing on the story behind the band's reunion." The following Sunday, 29 November, will feature the chance to "download five more Blur tracks from iTunes for free". For more information visit timesonline.co.uk/blur.

Monday, 3rd August 2009

(from xfm.co.uk) Graham Coxon has exclusively let slip to Xfm there WILL be some more live Blur dates... in Europe. Speaking to Xfm's Pete Mitchell at the iTunes Festival last week, the guitarist admitted, "We're talking about doing some more shows abroad... I'm not sure how much I can say about that, but we're definitely talking about it." The guitarist also told us he's been speaking to singer Damon Albarn about writing some new material together. "I think I said, that'd be quite good fun. That's as far as it's gone. We didn't bother really talking about it, we were just having a good time. We didn't want to put any adverse 'Gs' onto it."

Visit xfm.co.uk to listen to the lengthy interview in full - several Graham songs are played, the interviewer gets the album titles wrong, and Graham is on top form!

Sunday, 2nd August 2009

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. I will soon be adding some more articles to the archive.

In the meantime, I've scanned the Graham Coxon article from the latest NME (typed article to follow - the full scan is 1034x1500 and 987kb, for those with slow connections), in which Graham talks about his willingness to do a new Blur album, although you probably shouldn't hold your breath for it... Click the thumbnail on the right for the full scan.

Friday, 3rd July 2009

Scans from the latest issue of Time Out London (typed article coming soon):

Blur headlined the Pyramid Stage on the last day of the Glastonbury Festival on Sunday, and the consensus appears to be that it was one of their, and Glastonbury's, best gigs ever. Check out the 2009 archive for some of the reviews.

Sunday, 28th June 2009

Blur are working with Live Here Now to make both of the upcoming Hyde Park shows available as limited edition CDs and downloads. These special albums will only be available online and will be accompanied by photos taken from the shows. Visit blur.co.uk to reserve your copy.

Graham Coxon is interviewed in this month's Guitar Buyer magazine (cover date July 2009) and I've scanned the pages for you - click the thumbnails for larger scans:

The scans are large but for those with a slow connection, don't panic! I'll be typing up the article soon!

I've also scanned the pages from the recent issue of Mojo and added them to From the life of Leisure to inside the Think Tank... Enjoy!

Wednesday, 24th June 2009

Blur feature in this week's NME and I've scanned the pages for you - click the thumbnails for larger scans:

The scans are large but for those with a slow connection, don't panic! I'll be typing up the article soon!

Wednesday, 17th June 2009

Today's The Independent newspaper features a review (front page splash; review on page three - taking it very seriously!) of Blur's first public comeback show at Rough Trade East on Monday. Read First Night for the review (which includes a very nice photo). If you download the official Blur widget from blur.co.uk you can watch exclusive footage of Damon, Graham, Dave and Alex playing in front of that lucky 170-strong crowd. Also, a quick search on YouTube reveals a number of videos of the gig.

Sunday, 14th June 2009

It's good to be back! Some news and updates for you:

See the 2009 archive section for reviews of Blur's and Graham's latest releases, news about the Blur reunion, an A to Z of all things Blur, their first comeback gig, their recent win at the Mojo Awards, and more.
